Personal Injury Lawyers Assisting Victims Throughout North Carolina

Thousands of motor vehicle collisions and other avoidable accidents happen in North Carolina each year, causing injuries that result in financial burdens and emotional trauma to the accident victims. At Maurer Law, we are committed to serving people who need help in seeking the compensation that they deserve following an accident.

Our founder, Michael Maurer, is a former insurance company attorney who once defended the same types of cases he now handles for his clients. His insider knowledge in how insurance companies defend personal injury claims is invaluable to those he serves. Because of this experience, Mr. Maurer is able to see things from both sides which allows him to develop the best case strategies for his clients. In doing so, he works to anticipate and defeat the other side’s defense with the goal of obtaining the best possible outcomes for his clients.

Mr. Maurer also has unique insight into the inner workings of insurance claims departments. He knows who the real decisionmakers are and how to navigate through layers of bureaucracy to get their attention in certain cases—always being mindful of the client’s best interests and any potential downsides to this approach. Knowing the opponent’s playbook is also important because we know what types of information the insurance adjusters need to convince their superiors that a personal injury claim may well have more value than they initially assigned.

At Maurer Law, our goal is to provide outstanding legal representation to each of our clients and to handle their case as if it were our own. We treat all clients with empathy and respect and we always provide the personal attention that they expect and deserve. You can explore past client reviews to get a sense of who we are and how we treat those who put their trust in us after a serious injury or the death of a loved one. Our reviews tell our story better than we ever could.

Maurer Law is nothing like the stereotypical personal injury firm, such as those that advertise on TV, radio, or direct mail. In fact, we do not advertise at all. At the large “advertising” firms, clients may never even speak to (let alone meet) the attorney assigned to their case. At Maurer Law, however, Mr. Maurer is personally involved in each and every case so that the firm’s high standards can be maintained. Clients can be assured that the attorney they hire is the same attorney who is standing in their corner from beginning to end.

Our firm’s reputation has been built case by case, client by client, and trial by trial over the years. Our clients come from all walks of life. Ironically, a fair number of them have actually included the very people we have gone against, including insurance defense attorneys, insurance adjusters, and their friends and family.

We work tirelessly to ensure that each client’s claims are fully investigated and aggressively pursued. We will not accept a new case unless we would be willing to take it all the way to trial. Every case is prepared with this in mind. Drawing on his insurance defense background, Mr. Maurer knows that this kind of preparation is what is necessary for the insurance companies to take your case seriously and offer the compensation that is warranted.

Most of our clients are not the “suing” type. These folks can take comfort in the fact that because we prepare every case as if it will go to trial, we are actually able to settle most cases without even having to file a lawsuit. We see litigation as a last resort, but when it is necessary, we are ready, willing, and able to go all the way. Mr. Maurer relishes each opportunity he gets to present his clients’ cases to a jury and he has obtained outstanding results at trial over the years, especially in difficult cases.

Personal Injury

Personal injury claims can arise in many ways, ranging from car and truck accidents to pedestrian accidents to negligent security claims and nearly any type of negligence claim in between. The common thread running through each case type is a legal theory known as negligence. This basically means that someone’s failure to act in a reasonably careful and prudent manner resulted in harm to another person. If you have been involved in an accident in which someone else was at fault, you should take action as soon as possible. Personal injury cases need to be filed within a certain statute of limitations, or a victim will lose their rights. A personal injury attorney in Raleigh or elsewhere in North Carolina can help you investigate your claim and determine whether your claim is legally viable.

Car Accidents

A car accident is perhaps the most common example of a personal injury case. The injured victim must show that the at fault party (usually called the “defendant”) failed to act carefully behind the wheel. Perhaps the defendant failed to yield when required, became distracted by texting, or was speeding excessively. The victim also must show that they would not have been hurt if not for the defendant’s careless actions and they must also provide evidence of the damages that they suffered. Some car accident cases benefit from testimony by a medical expert who can explain the nature and extent of the victim’s injuries, as well as the likely future impact of those injuries on the victim’s life.

Truck Accidents

In truck accident cases, not only is the truck driver a likely defendant, but the trucking company that owned the semi-truck and/or trailer may typically be named as a defendant as well. This is because the company is responsible for the actions of its employees while they are on the job. Sometimes the trucking company will bear direct fault for an accident as well. The company might encourage a driver to violate hours of service rules, for example, or it may fail to properly maintain its trucks. Adding a trucking company as a defendant can open up the possibility of having an additional source of liability insurance to pursue for a seriously injured client. We explore every possible avenue of compensation for a client and will not hesitate to fight against large companies on behalf of ordinary people.

Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycle accidents cause some of the most catastrophic personal injuries, due to the direct exposure of the rider to their surroundings. Unfortunately, some defendants and insurers try to blame an innocent motorcyclist for being responsible for their own injuries. North Carolina follows the strict “contributory negligence” rule—under which even a small amount of fault on the client’s part can prevent them from collecting damages from the defendant. A personal injury lawyer in our Raleigh office or one of our other offices can help combat this and other defenses raised by the insurance companies and help level the playing field for an accident victim.

Wrongful Death

When the negligence of a person or entity results in a victim’s death, the family members left behind may have a wrongful death claim against the defendant(s). A personal representative (or executor) of the victim’s estate can bring a wrongful death action with the assistance of a Raleigh personal injury lawyer. If a wrongful death case is successful, the victim’s next of kin may receive compensation for funeral and burial costs, final medical expenses, lost earnings, loss of consortium, and other damages. The amount of compensation can vary substantially from one case to another, depending on factors such as the age and health of the victim, their income and earning capacity, and whether the defendant’s conduct rose to the level of extreme recklessness. The statute of limitations is substantially shorter for a wrongful death case than for a regular personal injury case, so it is important to contact an attorney as soon as possible if you have lost a loved one in an accident.
